Opal's Baby by John Patrick (A Sequel to "Everybody Loves Opal" in Two Acts) Performance dates are: Friday, April 13, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hartington City Auditorium Adults: $7.00
Children 11 and under: $3.00
Synopsis: Opal Kronkie, a middle-aged recluse, lives in a tumbledown mansion at the edge of the municipal dump. The general disarray of her establishment is aggravated by the fact that Opal collects things--anything that can be toted home in her little red wagon. Opal is also an optimist, for no matter how mean her lot--or her "friends"--Opal responds with unfailing kindness and an abiding faith in the goodness of human nature. The setting is Opal's tumbledown home on the edge of the city dump, where Opal has a visitor looking for a tire to fit his 1927 Reo truck. Misguided into thinking that Opal is a rich eccentric, the shifty visitor, Norman, announces (fallaciously) that he too is a Kronkie--and Opal's long-lost kin. The upshot is that the warmhearted Opal takes him, and his whole family, in--whereupon they scheme to do her out of her supposed fortune.

CAST BIOS Vanessa Gorden (Opal Kronkie): New to our stage, but no stranger to the stage, is Vanessa Gorden. Vanessa moved to Hartington just over a year ago. She is an associate attorney with Kennedy, Rokahr, Pier & Knoff in Hartington and Yankton. In her ever-elusive "spare time," Vanessa enjoys writing and performing poetry and playing with her dog, "Dublin." This is her first time back on stage since high school, and she is extremely excited to be involved with this CCT production. We're happy to have her. Crystal Lenzen (Rosie): Crystal has a history of the dramatics dating as far back as high school and college where she participated in plays and speech. She has graced the Bow Valley stage and has performed in such Cedar County Theatre productions as "How the West Was Fun," "Murdered to Death," "Harvey," and "The Perils of Priscilla." Crystal enjoys being involved with productions because it is fun getting to know new people. She is employed by the City of Hartington as the City Clerk and Treasurer. She and her husband, Ray, have been married for 39 years and they enjoy spending time with their seven children. When she's not working or performing, Crystal enjoys baking and gardening. Kelly Kneifl (Norman): Kelly Kneifl has been involved in several productions in the last several years, both here at the Cedar County Theater and at the Lewis and Clark Theater in Yankton. Most recently he directed and acted in CCT's "The Perils of Priscilla" in the Fall 2006. In the Fall of 2005, Kelly took on the lead role of Elwood P. Dowd in CCT's production of "Harvey." He enjoys the theater and camaraderie with the cast. Kelly has five children including a couple of drama queens. He is employed at Shur-Co in Yankton, and in his spare time he volunteers on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council and Light Truck Accessory Alliance Select Committee. Lee Carl (Spencer): Lee is in another CCT production. You'll remember him from "Murdered to Death" as Bunting, the tipsy butler; and from "The Great Easter Egg Hunt" as the gun-toting Mr. Waxley. When asked if he acted in high school plays, Lee replied, "Yup." When asked if he was in some of them or all of them, Lee replied, "Yup." Lee is famous for playing some unforgettable characters in the past, so we asked him if he could tell us what makes Spencer such a special character for him. He replied, "Can't," and then took off running, yelling "Verna!" I guess we'll catch up with him later, when he's not in character. Ann Filips (Verna): Ann Filips is also one of the newest members of the cast and community. Although this is her first acting role, she is a natural ham and loves to entertain people. She looks forward to bringing her unique interpretation of Verna to our production. Ann works at Filips Eye Clinic in Creighton with her husband. She moved to Hartington June of 2006 when she married Dr. Roger Filips. She has one daughter, Emily, who will be attending Sanford School of Radiology in Sioux Falls this summer. Ann grew up in Beresford, SD, and lived in Sioux Falls, SD, for the last 14 years before moving to Hartington. Rhonda Kuchta (Granny): Rhonda made her acting debut for the Cedar County Theatre in "The Perils of Priscilla" in the fall of 2006. Always a little over-dramatic in life, she enjoys being on stage and adding a little "extra" to her characters. She and her husband Kenny, are now empty-nesters with both of their kids in college: Megan, a Junior at Wayne State majoring in Graphic Design, and Aaron, a Freshman at USD, Vermillion, majoring in Theatre Arts. Sally Opfer (Director): Directing credits include: An Evening of Culture (Nov '02), Christmas Duet ('03), How the West Was Fun (Mar '04), Murdered to Death (Fall '04), and Harvey (Fall '05). Opal Kronkie is dear to her heart. Back in November, 1981 (forever ago), Sally played Opal Kronkie in Opal's Baby under the superb direction of Loxi Wolf at Hartington Public School. The part of Opal Kronkie was a joy and an honor for her to play; and she truly believes that if everyone in the world had a little Opal in them, the world would be a much happier, more peaceful place to be. She hopes all of you enjoy Opal as much as she does. Ron Pearson (Stage Manager): This is Ron's first time backstage running the show. You'll remember him as Judge Omar Gaffney from "Harvey," the dastardly villain Smedley Smidgin from "The Perils of Priscilla," and as Donner from "The Eight: Reindeer Monologues." Ron's greatest strength is showing up...just kidding. He's been invaluable to each production he's a part of, whether he's on stage or lurking behind the scenes.
